Chestnuts are a very nutritious food. Unlike other nuts such as pecans and walnuts, which are high in fat, chestnuts only have a very small amount of fat and are a third the calories of other nuts such as cashews or peanuts. Chestnuts are rare, in that they are the only nut with a significant amount of vitamin C and zero cholesterol. Chestnuts have excellent quantities of protein and are comparable in amino-acid content to eggs. Chestnuts are considered “a grain that grows on a tree,” similar nutritionally to brown rice.

DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Chestnuts reduce cholesterol levels and stabilize blood sugar levels. They also reduce the risk of constipation and intestinal complications such as diverticulosis.

INCREASED BRAIN FUNCTION
Chestnuts contain fat-soluble B vitamins that promote healthy skin, produce red blood cells and improve brain function.

INCREASED ENERGY LEVELS
Chestnuts contain high amounts of carbohydrates, which are needed for short and long term energy. They also help with nervous system function.

GLUTEN FREE
Chestnuts are of great benefit to patients with celiac disease, which is a disease that upsets the small intestine.
